Through Small Eyes: The Magic of a Family Safari with Africa Eco Expeditions Camp in the Lobo Valley of the Serengeti

Stepping into the Wilderness of Africa

Stepping into the vast wilderness of Africa, one can’t help but be captivated by its raw beauty. But as camp owners, we’ve learned that there isn’t just one “wilderness”—there are as many versions of it as there are guests who walk through our canvas doors. We have the privilege of witnessing nature’s full arc: the clumsy first steps of a newborn giraffe, the rise of a dominant lion, and the quiet passing of the seasons written in the color of the grass. But perhaps our favorite way to see the Serengeti is through the wonder-filled eyes of a child.

We see it time and again. A family arrives, and the children often walk hesitantly behind their parents, unsure of this big, wild space. But the Serengeti has a way of breaking the ice. Recently, a family arrived and barely had their bags down before a massive herd of wildebeest and zebra appeared right in front of Tent 2. I invited the children to the deck, and in an instant, the hesitation vanished. They stood in silence, watching the “Great Migration” happen just yards from where they would sleep. That was just the beginning.

Over the course of their stay, they encountered:

  • The “Lion King” Reality: Nearly 40 lions throughout the safari, including pride after pride of playful cubs.
  • The Giants: Massive herds of elephants moving like grey ghosts through the acacia.
  • The Full Cast: Giraffes, leopards, and all the “usual suspects” that populate a child’s imagination.

Family Safaris at Africa Eco Expeditions

In an age of constant connectivity, there is something deeply moving about watching a child trade a smartphone for a pair of binoculars or a lens. On a recent visit, one young boy expressed an interest in photography. I lent him my camera and gave him a quick “field masterclass” on how to use it. From that point on, he was addicted. He wasn’t just looking at animals; he was composing stories. To watch a child find a new passion and a sense of profound peace away from a screen is, for us, one of the greatest rewards of hosting families.

At Africa Eco Expeditions, we believe the best game drives are the ones where we stop to look at the “little things” you might miss from a speeding car. We take the time to explain the ecosystem so that every child leaves with a deeper appreciation of the world we inhabit.

Our Family Safaris

Our family safaris aren’t just about the Big Five; they are about the “Ordinary Extraordinary”:

  • The Circle of Life: Walking through the bush to find chameleons, dung beetles, and the weathered bones that tell the story of the valley.
  • Nature’s Engineers: Watching scarab beetles roll dung balls with immaculate precision, using celestial cues to find their way home.
  • The Night Sky: Using a star pointer to invent “new” constellations in a sky so dark the Milky Way looks like a cloud.
  • The Vibration of the Wild: Feeling the Land Cruiser literally vibrate as a lion roars nearby—a physical memory they will never forget.

We make sure the kids have room to be kids. Whether it’s a high-energy soccer match with the camp team, climbing the ancient granite kopjes to watch the sun sink below the hills, or sharing a bush lunch under an acacia tree surrounded by grazing herds, the Lobo Valley becomes their playground.

Why It Matters

Witnessing the bush through a child reminds us that you cannot become complacent with the world. It requires you to take note of the small details—the iridescent blue light on a starling’s feather or the way a leopard plays lovingly with her cubs. Somewhere amongst this attention to the “ordinary,” we find a passage to the extraordinary. At Africa Eco Expeditions, we don’t just show families the wildlife; we help them find their place within it.

My Favorite Secret: Why I Love the Green Season in Lobo Valley

While much of the world is shivering under snow and frost, our corner of the Serengeti is waking up in a vibrant explosion of life. To many, this is the "Green Season" (December through May), but to me, it’s the most soulful time to be in the bush. If you’re looking for a holiday escape that prioritizes connection over "ticking boxes," this is your sanctuary.

The Art of the Slow Safari: Planning Your Safari

In a world that prizes speed, the ultimate luxury is the ability to slow down. Planning a safari can feel like a daunting logistical puzzle - balancing seasons, regions, and bush-plane transfers. The Art of the Slow Safari: Why “Staying Put” is the Ultimate Luxury

The Art of the Slow Safari: Why “Staying Put” is the Ultimate Luxury

In the world of African travel, there is a common trap: the "Checklist Chase." It’s the frantic urge to see everything in short period, packing and unpacking every 48 hours, and spending more time staring at the back of a driver’s head than at the wildlife. By the third day of a “circuit" safari, you aren't a traveler anymore; you’re a professional passenger. You’re dusty, exhausted, and likely part of a "vehicle scrum"—that frantic cluster of twenty to 50+ Land Cruisers jostling for a glimpse of a big cat likely 800 meters away. But there is another way. It’s called the Slow Safari, and it’s a total game-changer.
